The word Stye refers to an infection of the eyes in and around the eyelid. It is caused bycontagious stye pic Staphylococcus. The affected area is swollen, it’s red and painful. It is soft to touch. It generally occurs on the corner of the eyelid. It is caused by bacterial infection. It has an itchy feeling and one rubs it to get rid of itchiness and this causes it to spread. If one follows cleanliness then this can be prevented and even cured easily. It stays for 3 to 4 days. Sometimes it disappears without forming into a boil. But sometimes it grows into a boil which bursts out and pus is discharged. There are some home remedies which if used gives comfort from the signs of redness, swelling and pain. Warm compress is the best way to heal stye. It should be used several times a day.

Turmeric can be used in warm compresses. One teaspoon of turmeric should be boiled in two cups of water. It should reduce to one cup. The water should be cooled and strained through a fine muslin cloth. This can be also used as an eye drop.

Coriander seeds can be also boiled in water. This can be used as a rinse. Eyes can be washed 3 to 4 times with this rinse. Alum dissolved in water can also be used as eyewash.

A handful of acacia leaves boiled in two cups of water. This can be used as a compress. Clove can also help in sty. A clove can be put in warm water and applied directly on the sty. They can also be used by wrapping in a cloth as a compress.

Guava leaves should be used as a compress with a warm damp cloth.

To reduce swelling even grated potatoes can be used in form of poultice.

Another option is apple. Apple can be boiled, mashed and wrapped in warm damp cloth and applied on the eyes gently. This should be done twice a day. Aloe leaf silted lengthwise can be used. Its pulpy side can be placed on the eye.

These home remedies are best to use and have no side effects. However if the problem persists one must see a doctor and follow his instructions, medicines and ointments are available in the medical stores. Surgery is the last treatment when there is no response to these treatments.

A high standard of hygiene should be followed after the occurrence of stye but if one follows certain basic rules it can avoid sty from occurring.
